1. Overview – UK Immigration Tier-1 Exceptional Talent.

You can apply for UK Immigration Tier-1 Exceptional Talent if you’ve been endorsed in your field in science, humanities, engineering, medicine, digital technology or the arts as:

  • a recognised leader (exceptional talent).
  • an emerging leader (exceptional promise).

You must also be from outside the European Economic Area (EEA) and Switzerland.

Application process – UK Immigration Tier-1 Exceptional Talent.

There’s a 2-stage application process to get UK Immigration Tier-1 Exceptional Talent  visa.

You first need to apply to the Home Office for endorsement as a leader or an emerging leader in your particular field.

Then, once you have been endorsed, you can apply for the visa.

There are limited places available under this visa category, with 500 places released on both 6 April and 1 October each year.

How long it will take – UK Immigration Tier-1 Exceptional Talent.

After you get your endorsement, you can apply for a visa up to 3 months before your date of travel to the UK.

You should get a decision on your visa within 3 weeks.

Fees – UK Immigration Tier-1 Exceptional Talent.

You must pay a separate fee for the 2 stages of this process:

  • stage 1 – endorsement (£281).
  • stage 2 – visa application (see table below).

You also have to pay the healthcare surcharge as part of your application. Check how much you’ll have to pay before you apply.

Stage 1 – UK Immigration Tier-1 Exceptional Talent.

All main applicants must pay the £281 fee to get an endorsement when applying for the first time or switching to this visa category.

You won’t automatically get a visa if you’ve been endorsed. You won’t be reimbursed your endorsement fee if your visa application is turned down.

Stage 2 – UK Immigration Tier-1 Exceptional Talent.

How much you pay to apply for a Tier 1 (Exceptional Talent) visa depends on your circumstances.

How long you can stay – UK Immigration Tier-1 Exceptional Talent.

You can stay in the UK for up to:

  • 5 years and 4 months if you apply outside the UK.
  • 5 years if you apply inside the UK.

You can choose how long you want to apply for, up to the maximum time allowed. You only have to pay the healthcare surcharge for the amount of time you choose.

You can apply to extend this visa for another 5 years.

You can apply for settlement once you’ve been in the UK for 5 years.

What you can and can’t do – UK Immigration Tier-1 Exceptional Talent.

You can:

  • work – for an employer, as a director of a company or be self-employed.
  • change jobs without telling the Home Office.
  • do voluntary work.
  • travel abroad and return to the UK.
  • bring family members with you.

You can’t:

  • get public funds.
  • work as a doctor or dentist in training.
  • work as a professional sportsperson or sports coach.

To get a UK Immigration Tier-1 Exceptional Talent visa., you need to be endorsed as a leader (exceptional talent) or emerging leader (exceptional promise) in.:

  • science.
  • engineering.
  • humanities.
  • medicine.
  • digital technology.
  • the arts.

Your application for endorsement is considered by.:

  • Arts Council England.
  • British Academy.
  • Royal Academy of Engineering.
  • Royal Society.
  • Tech City UK (Tech Nation).

You need to apply for endorsement using 2 forms.

What happens next. UK Immigration Tier-1 Exceptional Talent.

If you’re successful you’ll receive an email from the Home Office with a copy of your endorsement letter. You’ll need these for your visa application.

You’ll usually get a decision on your endorsement application within 8 weeks.

You won’t automatically get a visa if you’ve been endorsed. If your application is turned down you can request an endorsement review.

You must apply for your visa within 3 months of receiving your letter of endorsement from the Home Office.

When you apply you’ll need to provide.:

  • a current passport or other valid travel identification.
  • a passport size colour photograph.
  • evidence of the investment funds available to you.
  • a business plan.
  • evidence that you can support yourself during your stay.
  • proof that you meet the English language requirement.
  • your tuberculosis test results. if you’re from a country where you have to take the test.
  • a criminal record certificate from any country you have lived in for 12 months or more in the last 10 years.

Evidence of investment funds. UK Immigration Tier-1 Exceptional Talent.

You must provide the following evidence to show you have access to the appropriate investment funds.:

  • an official letter from each financial institution 
holding the funds.
  • for money held in the UK. only a recent personal bank or building society statement from the UK financial institution holding the funds, which confirms the amount of money available to you or your entrepreneurial team.
  • for money provided by a venture capital firm. or seed funding competition., a recent letter from an accountant confirming the amount of money made available to you or your business.
  • for money provided by a UK government department., a recent letter from an accountant or authorised official confirming the amount of money made available to you or your business.

Funding from a third party. UK Immigration Tier-1 Exceptional Talent.

You must provide evidence of funding from any third parties other than a UK entrepreneurial seed funding competition endorsed by UKTI or a UK government department.

You must also provide evidence if you’ve had the money for less than 90 days before you apply.

You must provide both.:

  • confirmation they’ve made the money available for you to invest in a UK business.
  • a letter from a legal representative (independent from those providing funds) confirming the signatures on the declaration are valid.

Evidence that you can support yourself. UK Immigration Tier-1 Exceptional Talent.

You must prove that you have enough personal savings to support yourself while you’re in the UK.

How you prove this depends on where you’re making your application from.:

  • outside the UK – you’ll need £3,310.
  • in the UK – you’ll need £945.

Your personal savings must have been in your bank account for 90 consecutive days before you apply.

You can’t use either of the following to support yourself.:

  • money from your investment funds.
  • money earned while working in the UK illegally.

You must apply online for a Tier 1 (Exceptional Talent) visa (unless you’re applying from North Korea).

You need to have your fingerprints and photograph taken at a visa application centre (to get a biometric residence permit) as part of your application.

You have to collect your biometric residence permit within 10 days of when you said you’d arrive in the UK (even if you actually arrive at a later date).

North Korea.

You can’t apply online if you’re living in North Korea.

To apply from North Korea you must.:

You can only switch to this visa if you’re already in the UK. You can apply toextend your existing visa from inside or outside the UK.

5. Extend your visa. UK Immigration Tier-1 Exceptional Talent.

You can apply to extend your UK Immigration Tier-1 Exceptional Talent visa if.:

  • the organisation that endorsed you has not withdrawn its approval.
  • you can provide evidence that you’re currently working in your expert field – the guidance notes have a full list of acceptable evidence.

You should apply before your current visa expires.

You can only apply to extend your visa from outside the UK if both of the following apply:

  • the UK embassy or consulate accepts Tier 1 (Exceptional Talent) visa applications.
  • you can legally stay in the country for at least 6 months.

A Tier 1 (Exceptional Talent) visa can be extended for up to 5 years.

Your dependants can use the premium service to extend. They should download and fill in the form and apply in person at a premium service centre. This costs £962 for your partner or child under 18 applying after you apply, or for a child over 18.

Biometric information. UK Immigration Tier-1 Exceptional Talent.

You must also provide your biometric information (fingerprints and a photo). This costs £19.20.

You can give your biometric information at certain Post Office branches.

You’ll get a biometric residence permit if your application to switch your visa is successful.

Apply outside the UK – UK Immigration Tier-1 Exceptional Talent.

You can apply online to extend a Tier 1 (Exceptional Talent) visa (unless you’re applying from North Korea).

6. Switch to this visa – UK Immigration Tier-1 Exceptional Talent.

You can apply to switch to a Tier 1 (Exceptional Talent) visa if you’re already in the UK with any of these visa types.:

  • Tier 1.
  • Tier 2.
  • Tier 5 (Temporary worker – Government Authorised Exchange) on an exchange scheme for sponsored researchers.

7. Family members. UK Immigration Tier-1 Exceptional Talent.

Your family members (dependants) must apply to join or remain with you in the UK if they’re from outside the European Economic Area (EEA) or Switzerland.

A dependant is any of the following.:

  • your partner.
  • your child under 18.
  • your child over 18 if they’re currently in the UK as a dependant.

They must complete their visa application by 5 July. if they’ve already paid the immigration health surcharge or they might have to pay it twice. They’ll get a refund for their first payment.

You can use the premium service. if you’re a dependant applying in the UK on your own. or you’re applying for your UK-born child to stay.

Dependants applying outside the UK. UK Immigration Tier-1 Exceptional Talent.

Your family members must apply online (unless you’re applying from North Korea)
